“A criminal with a criminal record called the developer on the pretext of developing a two-guntha plot near a gas station in Mundhwa on May 11 after a whistleblower was reported by the autorckshaw driver, Nazim Sayyed (23). The criminal and his three accomplices kidnapped the promoter and his friend. The five men abused and beat the duo before confining them to a place between Mundhwa and Tadigutta chowks,” Mundhwa Police Chief Inspector Bramhanand Naikawadi said on Saturday.
He said: “The suspects drove the duo into a car and confined them to a place in Laxminagar, Yerawada. They abused the developer again and demanded Rs2 lakh for his release. They assaulted his friend with a sickle butt to his legs. The promoter was also threatened with a sickle”.
Naikawadi said, “The suspects then robbed the developer of his bicycle, mobile phone and cash, collectively worth Rs 47,000. The incident was revealed after the duo escaped and returned home. The promoter filed an FIR against the suspects on Friday.”
He said: “The developer and the suspects do not know each other. Based on the information he gave us, we worked on some clues and arrested Sayyed in his hiding place. We have established the identity of two other men and have taken one of them into custody for questioning”.
Naikawadi said Sayyed’s interrogation revealed that the developer was not reimbursing Rs2 lakh taken from a woman, who had invested in his project before the Covid-19 outbreak. “She asked Sayyed for help. He and his accomplices then abducted the promoter and demanded money from him,” he said. An FIR related to kidnapping for ransom, dacoity and extortion has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
