The Mac mini appears to start normally and displays the login screen. All my regular accounts (2 of them) are there and when I log into either of the two accounts all that happens is the screen goes black and the mouse cursor goes blank. attach. I tried another HDMI cable but it was clearly not that.
So I started Internet Recovery on the M1. Safe mode made no difference (same result). Then I tried Disk Utility and verified/repaired the volume. No issues were found. Then I tried reinstalling MacOS but the setup says no administrator account was found, even though my usual account is an administrator account. I tried several times (before/after running disk utility in recovery mode).
I thought it might be a Filevault thing, so I tried disabling/unlocking it in the recovery wizard through the terminal, but that didn’t help find my admin account.
Some websites suggest trying to create a new administrator account, but I couldn’t find a good guide for the Apple Silicon era. Also, the problem is that it dims after login, so why is the setup wizard showing up to create a new account? I mean, I think the wizard should show up anyway because I just updated to 12.5 and it clearly doesn’t….
I’d rather not have to erase everything as I have the unfortunate problem of fixing my NAS (fan broke) and not having a Time Machine backup on hand at the moment (hope I can restore one later this month if that’s the only way).
Does anyone have any directions on how to proceed?
