The South Rink at the Mitchell Activity Center debuts a pair of new scoreboards to enhance the hockey spectator experience.
Eric Sabers, president of the Mitchell Hockey Association, said the existing scoreboards atop the South Rink, known as the Innovative Systems Rink, are about three decades old and could impede the ability to play hockey games. hockey on the ice sheet in the event of a malfunction. .
“The controller that makes it work is no longer available for refurbishment and repair by Daktronics. If we have the controller, we have to replace the dashboard. If it dies, we can’t host matches there down,” Sabers said at Thursday’s Parks and Recreation Board meeting.
While the north rink inside the MAC serves as the main ice rink on which the Mitchell Marlins Hockey Club competes, Sabers said making the Innovative Systems rink viable will allow the facility to host more tournaments and double-headed matches.
“It also helps with our training because when we have two different controllers, there are a lot of people who are intimidated by our old controller (dashboard controller),” Sabers said.
According to Sabers, the new dashboards will mimic what’s inside the Sioux Falls iceplex.
Upgrading the MAC has been a mission shared by Mitchell hockey executives, and the new scoreboards are the latest project to improve the facility. Over the past few years, hockey and skating organizations have upgraded the washrooms, repainted parts of the interior, and revamped the lobby.
