Facebook parent company Meta Platforms is expanding its footprint in central Texas with plans for an $800 million data center in Temple.
The new data center is expected to be 900,000 square feet and employ 100 people, the company said. the data center should be operational by 2024. Temple is about 60 miles north of Austin and has a population of about 80,000.
Meta, which changed its name in October to reflect its growing interest in the metaverse, is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Meta Quest. The company’s data centers support these applications and services, and the Temple site will add to the company’s growing data center cloud capacity.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in the spring, and the company estimated it would employ 1,250 construction workers at the height of construction.
Darcy Nothnagle, director of community and economic development for Meta, said the company expects to be part of a “strong partnership” with the Temple community.
“We have been welcomed by a strong set of local partners who are committed to the long-term success of the region,” Nothnagle said in a written statement.
On the Facebook page with information about the new Temple project, Meta said its data centers are part of the infrastructure that helps bring its products to people around the world.
“Temple stood out as an exceptional location for a number of reasons,” the company said. “It offers good access to infrastructure and renewable energy, has a strong talent pool and we have been welcomed by a large number of community partners who have helped us move this project forward quickly. We are delighted to be the newest member of this great community.”
The Temple data center will be the company’s 21st data center worldwide, including 17 in the United States. The company also has a data center in Fort Worth, which it opened in 2017.
Facebook has increasingly grown its presence in the Austin area and central Texas. The company opened its first office in central Texas in 2010, and Austin has since become the Silicon Valley-based company’s fourth-largest hub. Facebook has more than 2,000 employees in the region and has added hundreds of workers in recent years. Currently, Meta’s job site lists over 600 open positions in Austin.
The Company’s local facilities include two downtown Austin locations, in the Third + Shoal Tower and an office tower at 300 W. Sixth St, as well as field offices in North Austin. In January, the company also said it plans to open another office space in the first quarter of 2024, occupying 33 floors in a 66-story mixed-use tower at 6th and Guadalupe slated to open next year.
