Ukrainian developer Frogwares has announced that they have a new project in development, although it’s not the project they intended to do just yet. Palianytsia Project is a game that will mix horror and mystery and is in its very early stages. However, Frogwares wants it to act as a symbol that the studio can still carry on despite the current situation, as well as a “clear middle finger” for Russia.
What we know about the Palianytsia project
Project Palianytsia is a “mixture of eldritch horror coupled with a Victorian era mystery” that is intended to appeal to fans of the developer’s previous games, The Sinking City and the Sherlock Holmes franchise. The game will be “more streamlined” than their more recent titles, but it’s a game the team felt confident they could complete “under these extreme circumstances”. The game will be unveiled properly this summer. If you’re wondering why the game was advertised this way, Frogwares Communications Manager Sergey Oganesyan had an answer to that:
We’re revealing the game now in this way just to show people we’re pushing and also as a clear middle finger to those who thought they might just come into our country in hopes of disrupting and ruining our lives.

Palianytsia is a type of bread considered a national dish in Ukraine. It also took on a second meaning during the recent conflict, as the word is difficult for Russians to pronounce correctly. As such, it is used as a test to identify Russians trying to impersonate Ukrainian citizens.
