Leading edge erosion specialist Edge Solutions has been awarded contracts to install Armor Edge blade protection systems on offshore wind farms in the Baltic and Southern North Sea
The orders follow successful trials of bespoke erosion shields with the same operators at as-yet-unknown sites in 2020 and 2021.
The installations will be completed mid-year by trained technicians using ultra-durable screens that have an expected lifespan of over 20 years. Shields will be shaped to fit Siemens 3.6-120 and Senvion 6.2M126 offshore wind turbines
Edge Solutions Managing Director David Urch said, “These latest orders are great validation for our product which has now been operational for two difficult winters.
“We are now seeing repeat orders, generating significant revenue momentum and each new installation gives us increasing confidence in the ease of application of our system, which reduces downtime for operators.
“Customer feedback allows us to further improve the system with flush end-to-end joints, which will further simplify the application and improve performance. We are now seeing growing interest from customers in Europe, Asia and the United States. »
The Armor Edge shields have been developed using a bespoke version of INEOS’ ultra-tough Luran SC thermoplastic material, created specifically for wind turbine blades.
Each Armor Edge shield is up to 1m long and is custom formed for the exact blade type, then glued in place by trained technicians. It is designed to allow rapid installation, which reduces downtime and improves profitability for wind farm owners.
